1st Birthday Cake

This cake was for a beautiful little girl who was turning one. She also happens to be my niece. I made a smash cake to go with it but unfortunately I forgot to take pictures of it. I don't know how I could have forgotten it. It was only 6:00 a.m when I was taking these pics and I had not been to bed yet at all. The smash cake was a one layer 6 in. round, all decorated in buttercream so she could make a Big mess. Her mom requested it be made in lighter colors than the cake, since she would be wearing it. LOL So I did light yellow and pink polka dots and a number one on it.

This cake was decorated to match the decor of the party. I cannot, however, take credit for the design of it. I was just a last minute fill in because the original cake decorator was unable to do it. So I tried my best to do what they had already planned. I am sure, though, it was not quite as good as what it should have been. I know there were many things I would have done differently if I had had the time. I just did the best I could do in the very short time I was given. I will say though, that this is my first and last rush order. I made that promise to my family. But I'm happy for Victory that she was able to have a cake for her 1st birthday.

Happy Birthday sweet Victory! I hope you enjoyed your party and had a great birthday!

Double Graduation Cake

This cake was for two of my cousins. One just graduated from High School and the other one from LSU. They were having a big crawfish boil and pool party to celebrate with all of their family and friends. We all got a sweet surprise when my little brother, who lives in Georgia, showed up at the party. It made my day for sure!
This cake was chocolate with a cream cheese, kool whip filling that had chocolate almond bars chopped up in it. I'm going to have to come up with a name for this filling and add it to my list. It's from one of my family's  favorite cakes that we love to make and it's actually the icing on that cake. I used it as a filling because it's Breanna's favorite and mine too,..well actually I think there our several of us who would call this one a favorite.
This is the back of the cake.
I love you Cory and Breanna and I'm very proud of you both!!

Pool Cake

This was an extremely fun cake for me to do and I was very happy with the outcome! It was for a little boy who loves to swim and was having a pool party!
The water was made with piping gel and the little people were molded from modeling chocolate. All of the other details were made from fondant and gumpaste.
This is suppose to be the birthday boy, Landon. Landon is an Auburn fan so I made him an AU beach towel. He is also holding up 6 fingers because he turned 6 yrs old on his birthday.

The woman with the glasses is suppose to be Landon's Mom.
This little kid is...., well I figured Landon needed a buddy to play with. He is just floating in the pool, relaxing. This was my first time ever making people and I still need a lot more practise with it. It was definitely a challenge, but I enjoyed it!
On the way to the party, my oldest son, Dylan said the sweetest and funniest thing to me. He said, "Moma how did you learn to be a cake artist?". I laughed, but at the same time I thought that was so sweet of him to look at it that way. He does not realize how much that meant to me and how good he made me feel.

I want to thank Landon for inviting us to his party! The boys and I had a blast! Happy Birthday Landon!

And Gavin would like for me to set the record straight once and for all; to a certain local lifeguard, if you happen to be reading this, Gavin CAN swim. Thank you for your concern, but it's not necessary. lol
Gavin had such a hard time getting over this. I think he wanted me to make that girl sit down and prove to her that he could swim and that she was wrong. I could not convince him that it did not matter what she thought. We have to work on that one or life is going to be hard.  If I've learned anything in life it's this,.. People think what they want to think and you are not going to convince them otherwise. Other people's opinions do not change what is true. It just broke his heart because he's worked so hard to learn to swim and he's very proud of himself. That's all we do around our house in the summer is swim. But I'm sure she was doing what she thought was best. You just can't convince Gavin of that.

Still Trying To Figure It All Out

I've been extremely busy with cake making and decorating for a while now. That is a really good thing, but as with all new adventures, there are a lot of new challenges as well. A month ago, I was learning how to manage this with just one child at home. One child who couldn't understand why I was unable to play with her whenever she wanted me to. Now my challenge is working with 3 at home. My kids, like most, tend to get into a lot of trouble if they don't have some planned activities through out the day.
I just finished a very detailed cake that I'm very excited about. I have worked all week on the details for this cake. This feels like the first time I have actually sat down and relaxed in a long while. The bad thing is that I haven't done anything with my kids and it has rained all week so they have been stuck inside = trouble.
Each of them has made some disturbing comments about me making cakes this week. My 5 yr old asked if I was going to be making that cake forever. My 16 yr old wanted to know if this would be my last cake, which it's not. Then my baby summed up how they have all been feeling I think the best. I told her we could play tomorrow because I was not going to be working on a cake. She said, "yeah, cause that would make me sad and I would rip up that cake".
They are the reason I started making cakes in the first place, because they loved it so much and it meant so much to them. Now they are starting to hate it because it is taking their Moma away. I have to figure out a balance. I have to figure out how to do all of this and still have happy nurtured children. Piece of cake,... right?
Well, I know that tomorrow, I belong to my children. And I don't have to start another cake until next Thursday. Praise the Lord for that! The kids and I will just have to figure out how to make this work one cake at a time,.......or they will just despise cake.  j/k

Sports Cake

This is for a little boy who loves sports! He is the son of a good friend of mine who I have been friends with since 1st grade, (a long time ago). I was very honored to be able to make his 4th birthday cake.
Andrew has great taste! He wanted a chocolate cake with cookies and cream filling, ....yummy! All the decorations were made from fondant and were all edible except the stick holding up the flag.
"Happy Birthday Andrew! Hope your cake made you smile!"

Graduation

This is eagle cake #2 for me. I was asked to make another one for the Kindergarten Graduation Reception. I was happy to do so. My little Gavin, was graduating that night. We are very proud of our extremely smart, soon to be , 6 yr old. I cannot believe how fast time goes by.

My very sweet and handsome little man!! He is also quite a good mathematician and a very skillful little builder. Yes, I am bragging!!

This time, I decided to do the eagle a little differently. I made it completely out of buttercream icing. I wanted to put LBA in red on the cake, but only had a little bit of red coloring left, which of course, made pink icing. So we had to make do with just an eagle this time. This was one layer of chocolate chip cake.

Lego Cake

This is for an adorable little boy who just turned 8 years old. It was an 8in. 2 layer, vanilla cake, with cookies and cream filling. The 3-D legos and the letters are made out of modeling chocolate. The flat legos on the side are fondant. The entire cake is iced in vanilla buttercream icing.

I really hope Colbey enjoyed it and had a GREAT birthday party!!

Happy Mother's Day!!!

I hope everyone has had a wonderful Mother's Day! I spent my day with my beautiful Mom and children and lots of other precious family. It's been a great day! I pray many blessings today on all Moms and on those who desire to be a Mom. Hope your day was filled with lots of smiles and laughter and dreams of the great times yet to come. (Psalm 113:9)

These are our butterfly cupcakes. The butterflies are made from melted chocolate. They were yummy! The idea came from a great cupcake book I have. I love cupcakes! I think they are perfect for kids. The "sweet memory" I have about these cupcakes, is my cousin, picking up one of the containers of cupcakes and accidentally dropping all of them on the floor. Well,...maybe that's a "not-so-sweet memory". After all that time in the kitchen making those butterflies, then sitting there seeing them broken into pieces all over the floor,.... well, you just have to laugh really. So hahahahahahahahahahahaha!!!!!!!

Wanted to make green ones too, but I ran out of steam. Too bad because they would have looked really great smashed on the floor with the other ones.

School Cake

I made this cake for my boys' school. It was an extremely large and very heavy cake. The right half of the cake is chocolate and the left half is vanilla. The entire cake is filled with cookies and cream filling and covered with vanilla buttercream. The eagle and letters I made from modeling chocolate. It would have looked better if I had used fondant but I thought the kids would prefer eating the chocolate.

Bridal Shower Cake

This cake was made for a beautiful bride-to-be who did not want anything too traditional.
The topper was inspired by Lindy Smith's cake jewelry. I thought it would be a nice keepsake for the bride. It was a bit time-consuming, as if making these cakes didn't consume enough already. But I was happy with it and would like to try it again. I would like to play around with different size beads or try a crown or fontain topper.

Easter Cake

This was our Easter Cake. It was white chocolate cake with vanilla buttercream icing in between the layers and underneath the marshmellow fondant.

Bunnies were made out of fondant. I made the brown one first and Faith said that he needed a girlfriend. So, of course, I had to make another one. Everyone still thought the pink and white one was a boy because it was taller. It only looked taller because the brown one was sitting on his butt. That, by the way, is how you know he is the male. At least that's how it works in my house. ha!

1st Cakes I Ever Sold

This is Bumblebee the Transformer. This cake was made for the son of a very good friend of mine. She is actually the person who encouraged me to start selling my cakes to begin with. I never thought I was good enough to do this, but she did. She built my confidence up more than she even knows. Thankyou Scarlet,..you have always been a TRUE FRIEND to me!

This cake was for a family who wanted to surprise 3 of their family members with Rascal Flatts concert tickets. So I made 3 tickets out of fondant and wrote their names on them so they would get the message when they saw the cake. The guitars and Rascal Flatts plaque are all made out of fondant.

My Kids and Their Cakes

This is Faith's bumble bee cake.

She was our little bee.

Dylan's radio cake. This was my 1st cake made with fondant.

Gavin's alligator shaped cupcakes.

Why I Bake Cakes

I made my first cake for my oldest son, Dylan when he was 3 yrs old. He is now 16. I think in the beginning I just wanted to see if I could do it. Then it very quickly become a much loved tradition with my little boy. He loved watching me make the cakes as much as he loved eating them. Except I do recall one cake that he would not even touch and this cake was entirely his idea. He even helped me make it. We had crushed up chocolate oreo cookies and put them on top of chocolate icing to look like dirt and mud. Then we had Monster Trucks driving through them. He loved the cake. Well, he loved looking at the cake, because when I cut him a piece of it, I noticed he was just staring at it. I asked him what was wrong and he said, "my cake has mud all over it". And he never would take one bite of it. I felt terrible that my child actual thought I had put mud on his birthday cake.

Dylan is almost 11 years older than Gavin, so he has had the most cakes made for him. When Gavin came along, I kept up the tradition and started making his cakes too. Then 2 and half years later comes little miss Faith.

I had prayed and asked God for a little girl since I already had 2 beautiful boys and here she was. But this beautiful little girl came with colic, something I had not ever experienced before. My boys both began sleeping through the night at 8 weeks old. Faith screamed all night for 4 months. She was an angel during the day, but I had a 2 year old at home with me as well. So sleeping during her naps did not always happen. Life was hard for a while and I was completely overwhelmed and sleep-deprived. When the boys birthdays rolled around that summer, I decided to order them a cake instead of making it myself. I was also thinking it was probably time to give up that tradition now that I had 3 kids. It just took too much time, time that I did not have to spare.

The day of their party, (I was bad and very tired, so I did a combined party for them that year), I noticed the boys looking at their cake. Dylan was telling Gavin about all of the different cakes I had made for him over the years. That being Gavin's 3rd birthday, I had only made 2 previous cakes for him and he could only remember 1 of them. Dylan was going on and on about how cool all of his cakes were and that they were a lot better than that one. Gavin got very upset and said, "Moma I want you to make me a bunch of cakes too". That is when I realized how much those pain in the butt birthday cakes, that I would spend half the day making, really meant, and I knew I had to keep making them. I told them that day, that I would make their cakes from then on.

And believe me, the first decision they make about their birthday is not who to invite or even what present they want, it is  instead all about the cake. They LOVE it! They love watching me make it and then they can't wait to show everyone that walks in the door. Usually right after their party, they are trying to decide what kind of cake they want for next year. It is because of how much they love it that I have now become so obsessed with cakes. Honestly, I think this is the only thing I do that actually impresses them. These cakes have become very sweet memories for me and my children that will stay with us forever.

Introduction

I figured the best way to start this blog is by introducing the 3 SWEETEST memories of my everyday,...Dylan, Gavin, and Faith. Anyone who reads this blog will hear a lot about them. They make me laugh, cry, pull my hair out at times,...they challenge me beyond what I think I can bear, and then at the same time, they are the reason my life is so filled with joy and excitement. I am soo THANKFUL for these sweet little memories that fill up my life. Children are a GIFT from God and these are my 3 precious PERFECT GIFTS (James 1:17)
